PMLD is one of 40 municipal utilities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Tiny ones like Paxton can’t always afford to invest in substantial clean energy technology like battery energy storage systems (BESS), but does that mean the people who live there should be left behind in the clean energy transition while increasing grid demands strain their resilience?

Not if Lightshift Energy and the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC) have something to say about it.

The City Council for Danville, Va., a public power community, on Nov. 7 approved plans for the construction of an energy storage facility in the city.

The Town of Paxton has some brand new batteries.

“Their purpose is to save money for the community," Rory Jones said, "and indirectly reduce carbon emissions.”

Jones is a founder of Lightshift Energy. He said the energy storage units will save 25,000 tons of CO2 over the course of their lives.

In a recent Q&A with the American Public Power Association, Barry Tupper, general manager of Massachusetts public power utility Holden Municipal Light Department, detailed how the utility and its customers are expected to benefit from a recently completed battery storage project with Lightshift Energy.

Batteries can serve double-duty, shoring up the grid and providing backup to buildings when the power goes out. This project shows how.

Lightshift Energy, a leading energy storage project developer, owner, and operator, today announced its participation in two initiatives that provide critical pathways to granular energy attribute and emissions accounting: the creation of the Power Emissions Certificates Alliance (PECA) and the signing of the United Nations 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact. Among other things, they detail how MMWEC and its member public power communities will benefit from the program.

The first-in-kind energy storage deployment will lower utility costs by approximately $200 million, while improving resilience and sustainability at community and state levels

Lightshift Energy announced capital infusions totaling $100M from Greenbacker Capital Management LLC.

Scheduled to be operational in 2024, the 3-megawatt/9-megawatt-hour energy storage facility “is designed to shield PMLD customers from escalating capacity and transmission costs that are a major contributor to rising electricity rates.”

Delorean Power co-founder and managing partner Rory Jones claimed the projects will “deliver major financial savings to the community of Groton in the range of ten million dollars” over their lifetime.

Delorean and Groton Electric Light Department to develop two energy storage assets set to deliver cost savings to ratepayers, including an innovative resilience project that will provide sustainable backup power to an elementary school.

Holden is where Virginia-based Delorean Power LLC is building its first battery storage unit in Massachusetts. The goal is big reductions in electricity bills for Holden residents and businesses while delivering more energy efficient power that benefits the environment.

Dynamic energy storage project will mitigate peak system demand and provide at least $10 million in cost savings to Holden Municipal Light Department customers.

The commission approved recommending the 29-megawatt battery storage facility during its May 18 meeting. The facility, which would be located in the Langley Research & Development Park, stores electrical power in large lithium-ion battery cells.

The budgets for each house range from $115,000 to $125,000, and funding came by anonymous donors, The West Piedmont Planning District Commission, St. Luke’s The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region, Delorean Power and the PRA Group for the first four houses.

State and local officials gathered Tuesday to hold a ribbon cutting for Danville Utilities’ new battery energy storage system, which was recently energized. The pilot project is one of several initiatives that Danville Utilities has undertaken to offset some of the volatility of the energy market.

The growth investment from Greenbacker, a leader in sustainable infrastructure investment, will allow Delorean to further scale its platform while continuing to execute and expand on its existing pipeline of energy storage projects.
